no, differnt regions have different codes on the games. So japanese games do not work in american consols.

-EDIT- Sorry, I just wanted to add an additional note on mod chipping your console. Modifying your console with a mod chip WILL invalidate your consoles warrenty. So beware that you do so at your own risk. Unless you know exactly what you're doing (regarding any mod chips that require you to open up your machine) then I suggest taking it into a specialist and have them make the modifications for you. It will cost a little more and still void your warrenty BUT you can rest assured the chip was installed by a professional.

As far as I know mod chips are not illegal to buy or use.

I'm uncertain as to where you live but if you are wanting to purchase a mod chip for your console so it can play any region games you may want to try doing a search on google for places that sell them (try searching 'gamecube mod chips').

If you're in the UK you can try the following site:

No. Like DVDs, consoloes only play the games that are made for thier particular region. So American Gamecubes play American games, European gamecubes play European games etc.

There are ways to get your console modified so that they do play games from any region, but it's illegal so I'm not going to advise you to do that.
