DivX

Question Posted Saturday June 30 2007, 7:44 pm

I just downloaded DivX so I could watch movies online for free. After the download was finished, my virus protector popped up and said DivX was a virus. Does anyone else use DivX or know anything about it being an actual virus?

Additional info, added Saturday June 30 2007, 10:13 pm:
I downloaded it from the official DivX website..

Just to add to what Master_Betty said... a lot of anti virus software will pick up and give false results for various software i.e. any program designed to alter or view your windows cd keys and such will be detected as a hacker/virus program when in actual fact it's not.

If you recieve an alert fist ensure whatever you download has been from a reliable source, look for the official web sites on google entering something like 'DivX official' into the search box.

Also, if you do get an alert but you are almost sure that it's safe you can double check this by using an online scanner/checker such as Kaspersky Online file scanner. There is a limit of 1MB files but it's very useful and handy incase your in need of a second opinion. You can find the site here: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

You probably downloaded it from a fraud website. I did the same thing on my old computer.

The only real download for Divx that you can find is on microsoft.com. So make sure that's the only website you download it from.

Good Luck.

DivX is a kind of file media (like mp3, mpeg, wav) and so shouldn't be a virus.

Did you download the player from the official site? [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

If you didn't, it's quite possible there was software bundled in with it and that's your problem. If it's just a case of windows blocking it, then dont worry - it's safe.<M"|

EDIT: The person above me is wrong. Divx is in direct competition with microsoft and apple.
