how do you know if it breaks?

The previous answers aren't exactly true.

You may or may not bleed, and you may or may not even be able to tell if it breaks. It may not even break. If it does, you might feel some pain, or just kind of a pressure or streching feeling. It can break when inserting a tampon, during activites like sports, or while having sex. I remember reading somewhere that some girls aren't even born with hymens. And some girls' hymens are in a position where it won't break. It's different for everyone.
