nonamecat answered Wednesday June 20 2007, 4:59 pm: The hymen is a fold of skin near the entrance of the vagina that is usually present at birth. This is often considered a sign of virginity, but it can be absent or ruptured by tampon use or even vigorous exercise. The hymen usually has an opening to allow blood to pass through it during menstruation. However, this hole is missing in imperforate hymen, and so menstrual blood cannot escape.
