A compliment is when you tell someone something that you really, truly admire about them. If you're saying something nice just to get brownie points or make them like you more, that's flattery. People can't always tell the difference, but sometimes they can, and they'll know you aren't really being sincere.
Knowing that... complimenting someone you actually admire is pretty easy. Just think of the things that you really like about them... and then tell them! If you're being honest, it shouldn't sound rehearsed or corny. But if you have trouble putting it into words, try starting with the following phrases:
"I love the way you..."
"I've always admired how you...."
"I think it's so awesome that you...."
"It makes me feel so good when you..."
"You're always so good at...."
Compliments are best when they come out of the blue, rather than right after someone has complimented you. And don't worry about not doing it enough... if you rarely give compliments, it will mean even more when you do give one! [ Jeanne's advice column | Ask Jeanne A Question ]
