beginning guitar, help!

i just picked up a guitar yesterday. i've been wanted to play for a couple years now. i already play violin for 6 years, and i'm at a solo level 6 so i'm not clueless about music. but my dad got me a book of chords, and I really have no idea what I'm doing. I want to be able to teach myself, but from where that's going I'm completely clueless. the the books it gives numbers, like which finger to use, but I have no idea where to put it! i just went onto a website for tabs, and it makes absolutely no sense to me. HELP! any simple tips would be extremely appreciated<3

The numbers tell you which Fret to put your fingers on, Not which finger to use.
You know what a fret is right?
e|--2--(middle finger)----------
B|--3---(ring finger)-----------
G|--2----(index finger)---------
D|------------------------------
A|------------------------------
E|------------------------------(This is the top string. The Fattest string)
Try that. That's the D chord.
You get what I mean?
And just take it from there.
