yes, gold (and gemstones) is judged in purity units of karats, so 18 karats is more pure. 18k has a higher percentage of gold than 14k and is therefore more expensive.

Adding on to what the person below me said, 18k gold is also softer since it contains more gold and gold is a soft mineral. So, like an 18k piece of jewelry might bend easier. I had a 18k ring and it was a little too big. The back of the ring like, flattened out after a few years.
