Confused about how a gynocologist appointment will help.

Question Posted Thursday May 24 2007, 11:00 pm

Hello and thank you in advance.

I am 18 years old and am having irregular periods. IN fact I haven't had my period in almost 2 years. I started late at 16 and only had my period once and then it stopped. At first everyone said it was normal but now I know it's not. I was booked an appointment with a regular doctor. I was wondering if you know what he will do. A relative of mine suggested that he will take a blood and urine test and then maybe book me to see a gynocologist. Do you think he will do these things?

And if I do end up having to see a gynocologist what exactly would be the point. I forgot to mention I'm a virgin so they can't exactly go right in there right? WHat will they do to me then? Give me just a regular check-up? Because I'm really uncomfortable with that. And frankly I could live with not knowing what is wrong and I am completely loving not having my period. HOwever I would love to hear your views on what I should expect.

Thanks!

If your regular doctor is a general practitioner
or a family doctor, he probably won't send you on to another doctor.

Not having your period can be anything from exercising a lot, gaining wait, hormone imbalance or thyroid problems. That can be found out by blood work.

If that all comes back okay you may have to have a pelvic exam. Here is a site that lets you know what
happens during those.

While on that website take a look around. There is a lot of good info there.

As a rule we don't allow duplicate questions.I am going to make an exception in your case. I
am going to refer you to another columnist
who may be of more help to you. Sabine is a nurse
so I know she will have much more information
for you. Here is a link to her column.

Good luck with it. :)
