I am 19 years old and a college sophomore. I am 5'7" and extremely athletic. Because of sports and probably a naturally fast metabolism I get hungry for an incredible amount of food. I eat 6000 to 7000 calories a day. My friends often tease me about this. They don't mean anything by it but it sometimes bothers me when other people are around. It bothers me more when I hang around new people. How should I handle it when we eat lunch somewhere and everyone is full except me? I sometimes get hungry at unusual times and if I don't get enough to eat I can get extremely hungry when no one else is. Many people tell me to have a doctor check me for this or that. I have been to the doctor and I find this rather annoying. It is especially awkward if I get very hungry when I am at a friends house. No one will want to go out and my friend says "get whatever you want from the kitchen". I often find this awkward because no matter how understanding they are I feel funny cleaning out my friend's fridge. Last Saturday I met a friend for lunch after 4 hours of swim practice. We had a small lunch and went to her apartment. After a couple of hours I was very very hungry. I ate a cup-o-noodles and 2 sandwiches and a banana while she made me some falafels. I finished the falafels and started making another sandwich. My friend started raving "are you STILL HUNGRY!!?? - how can you eat so much? - where does it go!? - you have to tell me where it goes!!" I have no answer. I'm just hungry. I'm sorry. Actually I finished the sandwich, some chicken salad and 2 more bananas while my friend continued her questions. The fact that I had a 30 minute run before breakfast and 4 hours of swimming after that doesn't figure in to her thinking. This kind of thing makes me feel awkward and when it is in a group or with strangers I don't know how to handle it. I want to hear any advice on how to make things smooth and not feel awkward.

Oops! I should have said: I am a girl!
I have seen several doctors in the last few years. None found any problem with me.
This isn't something which bothers me every day. It is not unusual for my friends to make comments but only maybe once a week do I get into an awkward situation.
Exercise sometimes kills my appetite for a short time. That's why a was so hungry at my friends house last Saturday. After a smallish breakfast and lunch, my hunger really kicked in at 2:00PM. Even though my friend made a big deal out of it, it wasn't really embarrassing for me because we know each other so well. Once I was staying with 4 friends from school and about 11:00PM I started to get ravenously hungry. That was very embarrassing. It was too late to go somewhere close and I didn't have a car. This is the kind of situation I don't know how to deal with. I tried to eat as little as possible to hold me over which just made me hungry an hour or two later.
Anyways, everybody's body is different. Some people need more calories than others. Although the average person doesn't eat 6k to 7k calories per day, that many calories isn't that crazy. I've met athletes who drink protein shakes with 1.5k calories+ in them. Being extremely athletic will cause you to eat a lot of calories, because you will have burned a lot of calories, especially after 4 hours of swim exercise. ALthough i'm no doctor, my guess is that you have a body type that requires more calories than the average person(which isn't something you should be ashamed of and it DOES NOT mean you are fat) and you happen to be hardcore when it comes to sports, hence the crazy calories. You sound healthy to me so don't worry about it. If your friends bother you, tell them to go screw themselves while you eat your food. :)
Another answer could possibly be that you have a tapeworm or another type of parasitic organism living in you that is taking a lot of your nutrients.(go to doctor to get checked) [ TheWallflower's advice column | Ask TheWallflower A Question ]
parksoccer10 answered Tuesday May 8 2007, 10:04 pm: Haha I eat a lot too. It's nothing to be ashamed of, although I also feel awkward eating a lot infront of people I don't really know. If i know I'm really hungry and around new people about to eat dinner or something I just say... oh by the way I eat a lot. They usually laugh and then if they comment later on how much I eat I just say.. well I warned you and I can't help it I'm hungry. Its one thing to eat a lot and be a couch potato and gain pounds each day, but since your athletic and I'm guessing have a huge metabolism, most people would look at how much you are eating and be jealous of the fact you can do it and they can't. Believe me I know what I'm talking about, one time I went out to breakfast with my friends and got this breakfast sampler... two eggs, two pancakes, two bacon, two sausages, two hams, and some of that potato stuff. And before I ate I was like omg I'm so hungry. I ate the whole thing where my friends could barely finish half of their plates (they got the same thing). They just laughed and said... wow you really were hungry. Yea every once in a while they'll bring it up like I can't believe you ate that much and I'll go, well I'm a growing girl or what can I say I was hungry. Don't feel awkward, love the fact that you can eat so much and not gain a lot of weight, those who comment on it don't matter because they are just jealous. Wow that was long.. hoped this helped :) [ parksoccer10's advice column | Ask parksoccer10 A Question ]
