Ok, what the person below me described sounded more like oral sex and foreplay, not masturbation.
Masturbation is stimulating your genitals BY YOURSELF. Bringing yourself to orgasm, basically.
If you're a girl, what happens is that when you get horny or "in the mood", you would touch yourself (breasts, genitals), stimulate your clitoris, etc. This also includes using dildos on yourself as well as fingers and vibrating sex toys.
If you're a guy, what happens is that when you get an erection, you would also touch yourself, ie "beat off/jack off", until you have an orgasm.
Girls are generally the type to do it in the bathtub surrounded by candles while most guys are "anywhere I can, anytime I can, as quick as I can" type people. Of course, there are exceptions, but that's the stereotype.

it just means you're horny, put simply.
there's no SPECIFIC way to do it, but i listed a few ways up there. fingering the clit area for females, or giving yourself a handjob if you're a male.
