Homework

Question Posted Thursday May 3 2007, 5:24 pm

I'm trying to help my younger brother that's in 5th grade (I'm in 8th) on his math homework, and I don't even know some of these answers! He needs help on 2 problems, here they are:

Which is NOT a rational number?

A. -3.95

B. -7
---
5

C. 5
---
0

D. 3.14

Next one:
An environmental club planted 2 trees in a park for each of its members. There were already 12 trees in the park. Let 't' represent the number or members. Which equation represents the situation?

A. 2t + 12 = 38
B. 12t + 2 = 38
C. 2t - 12 = 38
D. 12t - 2 = 38

Thank you!

theymos answered Thursday May 3 2007, 5:46 pm:
First one is 5/0, because anything divided by 0 is undefined, an irrational number.

Second one is A(2t+12=38), because 2 times the number of members(represented as "t") is the number of trees planted, and 12 is the number already there.

Be sure he reads my explanations, so he knows how to do it next time.
