Aargh, I can't fall asleep :(

Question Posted Thursday April 26 2007, 6:28 am

It's passed 3 AM, I'm really stressed out over my classes and can't fall asleep. I've been up all nightworking on this stupid assignment (I'm a senior in college)-- I'm too burned out to keep working on it, but I'm too awake to just go to sleep and work on it tomorrow (the actual deadline, holy crap...but I'm going to turn it in a day late). I procrastinated a bit much, and am now paying the price. Excuse the rambling, I'm burned out and can hardly think straight... BUT-
what do you do in similar situations where you're way too burned out from studying, but still can't go to bed? Any tips on relaxing and just going to sleep? Oh, i know the whole Time Management thing, and getting things done on time before they stress you out too much. But besides that (since it's too late now)..any other ideas?

-Sleep plays a significant role in brain development. Sleep helps maintaining normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory, innovative and flexible thinking.

-Lack of sleep has serious effects on our brain's ability to function. If you've ever pulled an all-nighter, you'll be familiar with the following after-effects: grumpiness, grogginess, irritability and forgetfulness. After just one night without sleep, concentration becomes more difficult and attention span shortens considerable.

-With continued lack of sufficient sleep, the part of the brain that controls language, memory, planning and sense of time is severely affected, practically shutting down!!

So, how do we sleep better?

* Exercise regularly. However, try to avoid exercising just before bedtime because that
may actually make it harder to go to sleep.
* Finish big meals at least three hours before going to bed
* Don't use your bedroom for other activities such as studying, working, or watching T.V.
* Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine in the late afternoon and evening.
* Create a bedroom environment that is comfortable for sleeping and keep it cool, dark, and free of noise.
* Read a relaxing book or listen to soothing music before getting into bed.
* If stressful thoughts or problems are weighing on your mind, write them down so you can put them aside for the night.
* Take a warm bath.

hope i helped. and get some sleep =]

I lay in my bed in the dark, on my back, and try to relax every part of my body. I am clearing my mind at the same time, trying to push thoughts out of my head, and just focusing on sinking into my mattress. Start at your toes and work up through each musscle until you are at your head. Breath steadily and just try to relax everything. Understand that one assignment is not going to affect your whole life. This stress will pass, and it isnt the end of the world. Like you said, time management is the key. And you will learn from this and avoid situations like this in the future.
Good luck!!
I know how you feel - im in 3rd year uni and its rough but i dont stress about things for more than a couple hours. its not worth it.
