windows live is alive, and you can talk to the person, and windows messenger is dead, and in order to talk to another person you have to send this little midget through the computer to give it to the other person

Windows messenger is a program that comes pre-installed with Windows XP (I'm not sure if it comes with Win2k) and has a very limited amount of features. If you're after just a very basic chatting tool on the MSN network then you can use Windows messenger without any problems. Windows live comes with a lot more features and additions and there's a lot of things you can do with it (play games, send audio clips, custom emotes etc, etc, etc).

Personally I prefer Live just because it has more features.
