people put it like if they aren't sure if they spelled something correctly.

like

"i want to sign up for after-school activities (sp?)"

it just means they are letting you know that they aren't sure of the spelling of the word of "activities"

People put it next to a word that they are unsure of the correct spelling.

For example:

"That piece of the puzzle is nesecary(sp?) to finish."

That means "spelling?" If that's next to a word, it means the person is unsure of the spelling of that word.
