I have a Dell and when my CD drive started acting up, I contacted Dell and they sent me a brand new one for free. So, contact whatever company made your computer and see if they can send you a new part at a discount or for free. There's no harm in asking. If you're not under warranty, your drive could just be dirty and not be malfunctioning because it's broken. Blow in it a lot and it might start working. If you want to go all out, get a pressurized can of air. I'm not sure exactly what they're called, but it's like a can of whipped cream with just air under a lot of pressure in it. The air comes out really fast and is great for cleaning computers out. Remember too, that the disks you are using could be scratched and it may not be your computer at all. Good luck! :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]

The same has happened to BOTH my drives on my main PC - the DVD re-writer drive refuses to read/write any CD's unless they are DVD's and my CD-RW drive will only sometimes read CD's inserted.
If you've not had the laptop long and is still under warrenty then I suggest you contact the place you brought it as they may be able to replace it for you or have it repaired under warrenty. If the warrenty has expired then your only alternative might be to replace it as I imagine a repair job will be equally as expensive, but don't take my word on this as prices can vary greatly from place to place.
You will not be able to plug in desktop CD drive into the laptop unless the desktop CD drive is an external drive. In which case there should be a connector on the back on the laptop where you can plug it in (if its a USB drive then even better) but again this varies from laptop to laptop.
Another option I thought I'd mention is trying a search on ebay to see if there's anyone selling the replacement drive you're after for cheap. Their not always cheaper on Ebay but sometimes you can grab yourself a good deal.Good luck with it. [ ammo's advice column | Ask ammo A Question ]
