Chances are they're hurting because you're not relaxed enough (ie. you're nervous about using them) or you're doing it wrong. It took me loads of tries to get it right but you've just gotta keep trying.
Make sure you don't use something like the jumbo tampons if you're a virgin and it's your first time trying them, try the normal ones.

yes, this is true. but it's also true that tampons hurt the first two or three times you put them in until you get the hang of them.
the reason it doesn't hurt after you've had sex is cause your cherry popped. the first time you put a tampon in, your cherry isn't popped. so it hurts because youre popping it. however, it might hurt so much that you just leave it sort of in, & you feel it when you walk. this might happen the first two times until you finally get it in there.
