summer program

Question Posted Wednesday March 28 2007, 6:56 pm

I'm looking for something to do this summer that is community service. I really want to go to a place like New Orleans and build houses.

Can anyone give me the names of programs that are for teens (i'm 16) for over the summer.

Thanks so much!!

Well, if you're into the whole church scene then you could always ask your church if they are participating in Seesalt. It's where your church goes somewhere for about a week to help places that need to be helped. (Last year & this year happen to be New Orleans.) Thousands of churches around the United States go to this & it's a wonderful cause. Hope I helped. :)

If you haven't already visited the Habitat For Humanity page you might want to start with it at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) You will be able to connect with a local chapter and see if they will allow you to work building houses with them with your family.

I've seen nothing to suggest that you need to be 18 to work with them on the web site but you should call their hotline number. Have you considered volunteering at your local hospital?

Hospitals all have volunteer programs that you can calll them about and see if they can use your talents in the administrative or other offices/depts. on a daily basis.

Also nursing homes or residences for seniors are in need of young people to visit seniors on a frequent basis who don't have family nearby or just to read to them.

Another interesting idea would be to call the museum in your city and or a local one if you're lucky to be in a small town and ask if you can volunteer with them. It's amazing what you could learn from working for them over the summer in a volunteer role with their professional staff.

Is there a cause that is close to your heart? You might be able to volunteer with the Cancer Society, Children's Wish Foundation etc. etc. in their offices. Try calling them if that's something you want to do.

Also look for the local chapters in your city/area of the Learning Disabilities Assoc. Of America. They always need clerical assistance and help with filing and mailing. It's not glamorous but you will learn an awful lot from it especially when it comes to tolerance and advocating for others.

Over the summer the political race for President will heat up going into the primaries next year. From what I know there will be organizations in your area or branches of the national campaigns for say Obama that could use youth to get out the vote etc. Check out their official web sites and see how you can help if politics is your thing.

Finally, if you write well or take awesome photos you might want to call your local paper up (the one that comes door to door with fliers not the daily as they've got pros) and ask if you can help them in their office by writing and or taking photos at events that the regular staff don't have time for.

I hope these ideas help you out.
