why would they do this?

Question Posted Tuesday March 27 2007, 9:47 am

so in college we're making a news doco as part of our course. around 10 girls wanted to be the presenter, and it was suggested we all stand up and say why we wanted to be the presenter and our "credentials" so to speak. then the class voted for who they wanted. not one single person voted for me, but everyone else got at least 1 vote. this stung a lot. i've only just started college and thought this was a little immature, it would have been better drawing the names out of the hat i thought. anyway i thought it was more a beauty contest than a judge on talent or even character. but i'm still really upset. especially since one guy said to me its because i dress "punk" so i would look weird as a news presenter. the girl who got it was blonde and tanned and wearing a mini. but is this really why they would pick her and not me? maybe i'm taking things too personally? i don't even know what my question is.. just give me some advice or your thoughts.. it was a bit of a blow.. thanks.

awww hun. don't worry about it! i can't pretend to know their motives for this but whatever they were it doesn't matter. i know it hurts - i've been there before, but rise above it and don't let it bother you.

if the reason they voted was because of looks then they are all immature and need to grow up and get a more mature outlook on the world like you clearly have.

i also think that there is a strong possibility that the reason you got no votes was because you are new at college and so everyone is more likely to vote for those that they know better.

don't take it personally, i don't know what you look like but even if they did vote on looks remember that everyone has different tastes and the chances are that if they did vote for looks then they didn't vote for their own preference but for what they 'think' is cool.

also, as far as you dressing punk is concerned, i think it is far cooler to have your own style than wear things you don't like because they are fashionable or tiny. i just wear things i like and my style wouldn't really fit into a category but it has elements of preppy and emo in it! i wear the things that i like, and that suit me, and don't give a stuff what anyone else thinks as long as i feel confident in myself, personality is much more important!!

so don't let it bother you! whatever their reasons its nothing to do with you, or if it is its pathetic and you are above it.

hope you feel a bit better,
laura xxx
