okay well what does standby mode do?
i really love how it "turns off" my laptop
and i press the power button and it asks
me to login again with ALL my windows
still open! so, does it take up less energy
than if i just shut it down? thanks in adv.
Hibernation, which I think you're actually talking about, saves all the info in RAM to the hard disk and shuts down the computer. It doesn't use any electricity. Hibernation isn't good or bad for the computer either. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]

It also doesn't take up any energy. You can wake it up by hitting any button on they key board or moving the mouse. It will keep all your windows you had open up, and it will ask you to sign in again incase another user is trying to get onto another account.
