There are several reasons why you may not be able to get a good night of sleep. Do you sleep during the day and take naps? Do you feel tired during the day? Do you feel sluggish? Do you eat or exercise right before bedtime? Are you overweight? All of these things may help diagnose why you may not be getting the restful sleep that you want.

Some of the things that you can do to help encourage restful sleep:

1. Do not exercise or eat foods within 3 hours of sleep. Do not eat foods with caffeine, including chocolate. Milk, ironically, is also not good for you when you're going to sleep, because of lactose digestion which is inhibited at night and can cause problems when you wake up.

2. Only go to bed when you're ready to sleep. Do not study, watch tv, read, talk on the phone etc. on your bed. Your bed should only be used for sleeping and other activities where the bed is used.

3. Make sure the temperature in the room is slightly cool esp if you use blankets. You're less likely to move around when you sleep if you're too warm.

4. If you're overweight, sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when many people sleep on their back and the back of their tongue can restrict the flow of air into their lungs- this can be remedied by propping up the head of your bed up by blocks (many people just prop their heads up with pillows but that really isn't the right way- you really want the bed on a slight angle), or try to sleep on your side.

As for the the screaming and not remembering- you may have what is called night terrors- which unlike dreams and nightmares occur during stage IV of sleep not REM cycle of sleep. You often don't remember it, but can be very frightening to people who observe it and may cause you to be even more tired in the morning. If you think you have these, you may need to have a sleep study done.

We all dream and go through all 5 stages of sleep in approximately 90 minutes, so technically speaking- if you sleep for 7.5 hours- you would have had 5 dreams- but you only remember the last one because thats the one that you wake up during. Hence why our dreams never seem "complete".

Hope this helps.

To help with sleeping you need lots of protein. Also you can get melitonin (a vitamin) from basically any drug store. You're probably having bad dreams from lack of sleep. If you keep having them after you start sleeping more then you should see a doctor.

When you sleep 6 hours or less per night, your mind tries to make up for the sleep deficiency by dreaming faster, which causes more bad dreams. So just sleep more, don't eat for an hour or two before you go to bed, and turn off all the noises and lights in your room when you go to bed. You'll also sleep better if you sleep in multiples of 90 minutes, so sleep for 6 hours, 7.5 hours, or 9 hours.
