actually, its when the skin on the tips of your fingers on the hand you play on the frets with get tougher/harder.[for right handed people, it'd be the left hand]. it hurts at first when you start playing, but you'll eventually get them so it's not so bad. i just started playing a few months ago and they're finally callusing over, haha.

if you're right handed, then it's going to happen to your left hand when you fret chords and stuff. basically, the strings cut into your fingers and after a while calluses form on your fingertips... it's just hardened skin... and then it doesn't hurt to play anymore. if you're left handed, then it will be your right hand. but yeah. for a few weeks, they hurt like crap but you have to keep playing and then they'll build up. you can tell if somebody's a guitar player or not by their fingertips.

Well thats basically if your not using a pick to play but its just the hardening of the skin on your figers so that they wont hurt or be sore if you play alot
