So basically I'm 14/f and I prefer using tampons over pads so much better for obvious reasons. But the thing is, my mom, who is extremely paranoid 24/7, won't let me because of the possibilities of the strings breaking and TSS. I've tried to tell her the string doesn't break easily (my friend tried to pull it off...didn't work and she's really athletic). She still, however, won't let me use tampons for life! How can I convince her? What can I say? Thanks!

DearAbby92 answered Saturday March 3 2007, 11:13 am: Get information on tampons from legit websites, brochures, and even a doctor. Show your mother that the chances of you getting toxic shock sydrome are VERY RARE and the chances of a string breaking are very rare (demonstrate that by trying to rip the string off a tampon) Tell her you would really appreciate it if you could use tampons because their easier and more comfortable for you. If they werent really that safe, the FDA wouldn't have approved them and they wouldnt have their own wall in every drugstore.

Tell your mom you want to go swimming but you can't cause you use pads. With a tampon you can go swimming. Perhaps you could tell her the blood collecting in the pad makes you smell bad.
Otherwise wait until you are 18, move out of her house then you can do what ever you want.
the reported risk of TSS are higher to women under 30 and teenage girls. The incidence of TSS is estimated to be between 1 and 17 cases of TSS per 100,000 menstrating women and girls per year. So it's rare.
You should select the minimum absorbency needed to control your flow to reduce your risk of TSS. In other words don't use the super or super plus. I prefer the slender regular with a plastic applicator. Playtex has a slimfits size.

However, it's difficult to win an arguement with your mother. [ mitzi's advice column | Ask mitzi A Question ]
