technically they are dangerous because they are guns. when you get shot with an airsoft gun, it doesn't really hurt, it just kind of pops you in the arm or whatever and may leave a red mark. i've never played paintball, but i've heard people talk about paintball injuries and it's nothing compared to that. as for plastic balls, i'm pretty sure you can... i think those are the ones that are different colors.

Yes, airsoft guns are dangerous. Any projectile small enough to get into your eye is dangerous. But with approved safety goggles or a paintball mask, risk of injury is greatly reduced. I am an avid paintballer and airsofter. Paintball hurts more in my opinion, and leaves a longer and larger bruise. But airsoft hurts for a few seconds and you forget about it. You also need to consider that adrenaline affects how much pain you will feel. If you are pumped up, you will feel less pain as compared to just sitting there watching tv. Yes, plastic airsoft bbs are usually more common than iron bbs. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT play in an airsoft war using iron bb's. Your friends will never let you play again, and iron bb's are dangerous, and can hurt the gun. An iron bb can lodge itself into the skin, causing problems. DO NOT PLAY WITH IRON BB'S.
hope i helped.

A safe distance to shot from... hm... well it's going to hurt no matter how far away you are. Just being hit with any projectile is going to hurt. What we play with however, is a 15 foot surrender rule. If you are within fifteen feet of someone, say sneaking up on them. Yell SURRENDER, and they have to surrender as opposed to being shot. This will save you many bruises and arguements.

I've been shot with an airsoft gun a few times. Depends on what's being used, the plastic ones hurt for a bit and leave a mark, and the metal balls hurt really bad and leave welts.

Airsoft guns are illegal in a lot of towns know, I'd look it up before you bought one.
