College

Question Posted Thursday February 22 2007, 9:34 pm

15/f 2nd year of highschool.

I've been thinking about college a lot lately. The bad thing: I totally don't understand it.

1. I don't understand the concept of "undergrad" or "grad school." How many years of schooling do you have to do?

2. Let's say I want to become a dance teacher. About how many years or school would I need?Would I study the different types of dancing (Preferably Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, and Acrobats) for four years each?

3. Let's say I want to become a Lawyer. How many years of school would I need? Is that where the grad school/undergrad school concepts come in?

4. Let's say I want to become a psychologist. How many years of school? If I do all the school and pass all the tests .. would I be considered a doctor?

5. What kind of jobs can I do to have the title of "doctor"?

6. For becoming a History teacher, how many years of schooling?

7. For becoming a dance teacher, lawyer, psychologist, or a history teacher .. what would good schools be? Preferably anywhere in the U.S. and preferably on the east coast.

Thank you so much!

1. An undergraduate degree is often called a Bachelor's degree- it is the degree attained after your high school degree. Most people get an undergraduate degree in 4 years. A graduate school is in different areas of studying- sort of- a more sub-specialty training- and depending on the type of graduate school can take anywhere from 1-5 extra years.

2. As for dance school- you would often take a semester (ie a couple of months) of a certain of dance, and then in later years you may specialize in a certain type of dance and performance, where you may also take classes on teaching. Generally you may take you 4 years. Some specialized performance schools will be only 2 years, but you may not get a degree per se.

3. Yes- To become a lawyer you would first have to complete an undergraduate degree (4 years), during your junior/senior year of undergraduate years you would take the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) and during your senior year apply to law school. You would then get into law school, where you would spend 3 years in law school (grad school) where after you're done with that you would get your JD (Juris Doctorate) degree. You would then take the bar exam to be licensed to practice law and congrats you're a lawyer :)

4. You can be considered a psychologist if you complete a degree in psychology- including an undergraduate degree (bachelor's degree)- so technically I'm a psychologist b/c I have a bachelor's degree in psychology. However, to most people to become a "real" psychologist you'll need graduate school work- which means at least a Masters degree (2 years of grad school) or a PhD (4 years of grad school). If you want to become a psychiatrist though, which is different, you would have to go to medical school and then go through a residency program in psychiatry (4 years undergraduate college + 4 years medical school + 3-4 years residency + 1-2 years fellowship (optional))

Doctors are considered those with PhD and M.D.s

5. Any job that has an advanced degree of M.D., PhD, D.O., DDM (dentistry)

6. Usually for a history teachers- you need a degree in history and than a few years of teaching to get a degree in teaching which in some colleges you can get at the same time- 4 years or maybe 6 years at most.

7.
Dance Teacher: Julliard, I can't really help with that.
Psychologist: Univ. of Michigan, Northwestern Univ., Johns Hopkins, Boston University, a lot of schools actually.
Lawyer: Grad Schools: Harvard, Yale, NYU, Columbia, Northwestern, Univ. of Chicago.
History: Harvard, Yale, Univ. of Chicago

Hope I helped.

AK

1.) undergrad = getting your bachelor's degree at a four-year college. if you just wanted to get a degree in business and then go start your own business, that would be the way to go. grad = after undergrad, this is when you get your master's degree if you want. this is only for certain professions, like becoming a lawyer or doctor.
2.) i would think that to become a dance teacher, you wouldn't need to have a bachelor's degree unless you wanted to go to a performance arts school. and then i think it would only be four years.
3.) my brother is a lawyer, he went to a four year college to get his bachelor's degree in business, and then went on to a three year grad school program at a different college to become a lawyer.
4.) four-year college, plus however many years of grad school to get a doctorate. and yes, you would be considered a doctor. i know some people that are considered doctors, even though they don't practice it. one of my music teachers has a doctorate in music, actually.
5.) a medical profession, or anything where you can prescribe medicine to patients. you can get a doctorate in many different subjects. some professors at colleges are even doctors, even though they don't practice medicine.
6.) for teachers, i'm not exactly sure. i think you have to go to a four year college, and then i don't think grad school is required but it is recommended. you have to take a course to get a certificate that says that you are eligible to teach a class.
7.) dance teacher: juilliard (performing arts school)... lawyer, psychologist, history teacher... pretty much any school. i don't live on the east coast so i don't really know the schools. of course, any ivy league school is amazing. personally, i think it would be really cool to go to the massachusetts institute of technology. hope i helped :)

okay a danve teacher would probably bee just a 4 year school ( which is normal) but for lawyer or a doctor you would be in college for 8 years.. 4 for regular classes and 4 more for actual law school! and to have the name doctor in front.. you just have to get a phd in something..
