I've just got some questions for bulimia for an artical i'm doing.. i'd like questions from people who know what they're talking about, not people who are just looking for ratings, please.=)
so first off, is there really a major difference between bulimia and laxative use? as in, in the long run are the results of losing weight different? which makes you lose weight at a more rapid pace, ect. just general information.
also, what are the positives and negatives of bulimia? please pay attention to the positives from the eyes of someone who sees him or herself as overweight. =)
The negatives are mainly health problems (heart, teeth, hands, stomach, throat, etc.), and lower self-esteem (the ED encourages low self-esteem, and vice versa). It's also tremendously lonely and alienating.
From a rational point of view, there really aren't positives. From a disordered point of view, there are many. Please keep in mind that these do NOT reflect my personal views, nor are the entirely sensible. That said . . .
Bulimia gives you sense of control over your body. You feel out of control when you eat, so purging, in any form, gives you some of that control back.
It allows you to eat as much of whatever food you like without worrying about the calories.
You may or may not lose weight--but the hope is generally that you will.
It's "yours." It belongs to you, no one else can control it.
It makes you special. You have the control to make yourself sick.
It can earn attention. People sit up and take notice.
It can hurt your body. That's a good thing for some disordered patients.
It's a release. Purging, particularly vomiting, allows you to release everything inside, often feeling like your cleansing yourself of negative emotions as well as food.
It can be mistaken as healthy behaviour, particularly in the excessive exercising situation. Fasting and over-exercising both are considered bulimic behaviour, but they're less obviously destructive than other methods of purging--and thus harder to recognise.
Those are the ones that come to mind. If you have more questions, feel free to ask--I'm fairly well-versed in eating disorders and the eating disordered mentality. [ Daimeera's advice column | Ask Daimeera A Question ]
pockets answered Wednesday January 31 2007, 5:02 pm: Laxative use is a form of bulimia. Using laxatives and throwing up are both ways to purge yourself and get rid of the food. The weight results between the two are mainly the same, depending on how often you vomit or use laxatives.
Positives- weight loss
Negatives- anemia or low protein, low nutrients in general, erosion of the esophagus, gross teeth, heart problems, stomach damage, other various health problems, and the hastle of hiding it from others (for example, trying to purge after dinner with the family home).
Also, laxatives can make you extremley sick. You get dizzy and lethargic when you use them, and eventually you'll get excruciating stomach pains. [ pockets's advice column | Ask pockets A Question ]
