Yeah, you need a codec. Codec is short for COde-DECode. Basically some files are in a special code, and you need a program to decode them. They're usually in codes to make them smaller or of better quality. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) gives free codecs for download; everything you can download from there is safe, but not everything is free. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
is a package that contains nearly every codec known to man, you should never have to worry about codecs ever in your life if you download and install this. When you install it, it will give a choice of what package you want to install, using the dropdown, choose "lots of stuff" to get everything. K-lite codec mega pack also includes:
**media player classic, which is better than windows media player, real, or quicktime.
**quicktime alternative, which is the codec to be able to play .mov files that only quicktime could play. You should make sure this isn't selected in the package option if you have quicktime installed.
**real alertnative, which is the codec for real player, without the crappy player. If you already have real installed, and don't want to uninstall it, make sure this isn't selected.

It installs automatically, you don't need to know where the codecs go. It's like installing a program.
