Raves are these humungous gatherings held in huge, usually out-of-nowhere places where they can't be heard ( like maybe a warehouse or somewhere like that ), and you just party for a several amount of days.
The reason they're illegal is because at these parties, lots of drugs can be found and teenagers are probably having sex and things, and kids could just get into alot of trouble for going to raves and getting caught by the police.

uhm no, its like goin to a school dance... ]
i'm pretty sure that raves are basically a nonstop party for days and days. almost all of the people would be on drugs, and that's probably why they're illegal. ]
Hey, ahah i think i just answered your question but here is the reason, when raves first started out they werent illegal but as they became bigger and bigger there started to become raves like just for drugs, and raves became really into the drug scene. A lot of police like would find this out and then they would have to stop them. So a lot of states have made them illegal. A rave is a party for teens kinda like a one night club.
this is the definition straight from urban dictionary.
