the thinnest string is the E string. from thickest to thinnest, the strings are tuned as follows: E-A-D-G-B-E so that might help you a little bit. if you're trying to tune the E string, you can play that note on a piano or another instrument and match the pitch.

Not exactly a guitar wiz here, but i'm pretty sure it's an E string? Cause i always heard the first and the last are the same, i might be living a lie here, but blame my friends for that one. Good luck, God Bless, and Merry Christmas~aeromonkey

I wish I could say it was a g string, but it's not; it is indeed an e string.

There are also pitch pipes available to tune to. I've never actually used one, so I'm not entirely sure of how they work, but basically they give you the correct pitch and you tune with your ear.

But I have a tuner from back when I was band and I love it, lol. If you're serious about guitar, or music in general, it's TOTALLY worth it.

i believe the smallest is the "e" string. And sorry, but i don't know much about tuning guitar...i can't really play instruments other than mild piano.
Hope i helped a little.

it's the e string.
and my boyfriend taught me an easy way to tune your guitar if you dont have one of those battery operated thingermabobs, but you kind of have to have a good ear. play the 6th string [top string] on the 5th fret, and it should sound like the 5th string open. do this same method for all of them, except when comparing the 3rd and 2nd string, play the 3rd string 4th fret instead of 5th.
hope that makes sense!
