if you do tell him, do it really casually when its just you two. If you dont want to tell him (because that really takes guts) you can get another guy friend to tell him and that will give him the idea of asking you and he will feel in control (and everyboy wants to feel in control)

I think that if you like him, write him a note telling him that you like him and see if he wants to do something, but add that you dont want it to be awkward. If he doesnt want to dont get all upset, and tell him you wont get upset so that he'll be honest. And say if it doesnt work out you can just be friends.....

Just ask him if he'd like to go to the movies with you, it is a perfect way to start off something, if he asks if its a date say yes.
But if your to shy , when your alone just kiss him and walk away , leave him thinking.
