tired!

Question Posted Monday December 11 2006, 6:56 pm

13/f
It seems like no matter what I do, I'm always tired! I try going to bed really early, but no matter what, it's always impossible for me to get out of bed the next morning. When I eventually get up, I'm tired for the rest of the day...I feel like I could just fall asleep standing! My mom won't let me take any type of caffine pills or drinks because she says they're not good for you all the time. What are some natural things or tips I can try that would help me be more awake and alert? Please help!

If the answers to the below questions are no (to avoid retyping them which would be a waste of everyone's time), you should definitely see your doctor. He or she might want to test you for illnesses such as mono and maybe even sleep apnea or depression--that can affect sleep.

Take careful note of your daily routine for a week or two. Write down when you eat and when you sleep and any exercise or extra curriculars, then see if there's any connection to how tired you are.

You haven't said how long this has been going on, or if it started suddenly. If it happened gradually, it's probably not as big a concern as if it began suddenly with no noticeable cause--in that case, I would get to the doctor as soon as you can.

Don't let it go without attention for too long--I have an illness that makes me feel exhausted and it took a long time to diagnose, so the sooner you get it talked about and checked out, the better.

Of course, you definitely want to try the tips mentioned below first--it might just be a normal part of growing up. Research has proven that teenagers require more sleep, AND their biological clock is such that they don't peak until later in the day than adults and children do.

One last thing--apples have been said to provide as much of an effect as caffeine when it comes to waking you up! Not sure if it's true, but they always help me feel better.
