umm, i dont really understand what the
magna carta is. could someone describe
the scene of it, what happened, who was
a part of it, and what was said there??
i think that will help me understand more.
if you can only answer 1 or 2 of the questions
thats okay. i just really need it explained!
websites are only okay if they are extremely
easy to understand and you could sum them up for me

queenhearts answered Wednesday November 15 2006, 8:24 pm:
The Magna Carta is an English charter(document).
An army of barons forced King John of England to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215.

The king abused his power. He oppressed his subjects and angered the barons by increasing taxes and demanding many soldiers for his military campaigns abroad.

The document had 63 clauses [rule]

-It established the principle that the king OR queen must obey the law.

~The barons were tired of the king's military campaigns and heavy taxes.

-The purpose of the document was the LIMIT THE POWER OF MONARCH and to secure rights such as:

trial by jury
due process of law
and protection AGAINST people with power -
taking of life, liberty or property.

Some laws:

The king can't decide things on his own. He needs the GENERAL COUNCIL to have a meeting on a certain day. The king has to give them time to arrive so they all can be there to vote and keep laws passing.

A person can't be imprisoned or banished/killed UNLESS by the lawful judgement of his peers (JURY) or by the law of the land

No bribing to get out of court.

-----

The goal was to limit the King's power and give rights and more freedom for the people.

IF YOU NEED MORE HELP ON SOMETHING SPECIFIC. JUST ASK. :] I can go through my notebook.
