kind of stuck in the middle of my friends :/

Ok so theres this kid and i kind of know him from last year so I decided to say hi to him on the first day of school. and now he follows me and my friend around EVERYWHERE. I dont want to be mean but hes really annoying and kind of weird, but he sits with us everyday at lunch because he doesnt have very many friends. I would be able to deal with that, but the other people i sit with absolutley hate him. They tell him basically what I'm thinking about him. One part of me wants to stand up for me but another part really wants to tell him that he needs to stop being so annoying and get some friends.
What should I do?

He's just really trying to make new friends.
He may even like you or your friend.
At lunch you could try saying, "Hey. Um, I just want to sit with them today, okay? Sorry! I'll talk to you later." But he might freak out about that, so I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
You can try and introduce him to some other people at your school and maybe he'll become friends with them and stop following you.
Get your friends to ask him why he's always following you and he'll probably stop soon.
