File Extentions and Media Players Codecs

Question Posted Saturday September 16 2006, 1:46 pm

2. Please define files having extension “.DAT”(DAT stands for?). And through which player we can play that kind of files? Windows media player-10 and Jet Audio –6 don’t play that kind of files. But if someone thinks that these players can play these files, then which codecs I have to install for that? And from where I can download these codecs free of cost?

When you download a file from some peer-to-peer programs (like Limewire, Kazaa, etc.) it will download it as a *.dat file until it's completed downloading. Your music players can't play it because it never finished.

Sometimes just opening up your downloading program and making sure it's "Completed" in the transfers window is good enough, but if not, try renaming the file to "Songname.mp3" and Windows should recognize that it is an mp3.
