Wood Panelling Nightmare! So I'm renting a house with friends, and somehow I ended up with the only room in the house with tacky, cheap fake wood panelling. It's kind of ugly, and I'm allowed to paint my room. I'm just concerned that it'll end up looking like painted panelling... but I don't have the time to spend filling in all the cracks. Has anybody else had to deal with something like this? I need ideas!

i have wood paneling and i chose a lavender and light blue as an accent color. i ended up painting my wall in stripes using every other panel a different color. it surprised me how good it came out. it's going to need a few coats of paint but in the end i really liked it. i forget that there's still paneling under it. i painted 2 of my walls just the purple and i can barely see the cracks in the paneling. ]
Hey,
This is a hard one...If you are going to paint it, the best color(s) are going to be white or whiteist...other colors really make the paneling look like painted paneling...One trick that you could do..is the leave the paneling alone..and go to an appliance store and get a few of the really big boxes like a refriderator would come in and make wall size panels..either the size of the wall or almost...paint them the color that you would like and put them into place..with tacks..you can also wall paper them or just do the one wall above your bed...just be sure not to over wet them when you paint...or you could order a few of the wall size posters...like the ones that look like the ocean or whatever..they will cover an entire wall..I could suggest more..but I'm sure that, if you are renting..you don't want to go into a major project.. ]
Well my moms an interior designer and she said two things:
1) Get a base coat and paint the cracks then use a roller to cover the rest of the walls
2) Cover it with drywall
My mom say number 1 looked really pretty cause we did it 3 years ago. I know it's sucky advice but me and my mom hope we helped! ]
Painting is a great idea. Ask the salesperson at the paint store for advice on specifically covering the paneling. If the paint does not do it for you, consider hanging fabric at least on one wall and get creative! ]
