To date or not to date?

Question Posted Sunday September 10 2006, 10:32 pm

I'm a female, 16 years old, and I have absolutely no experience whatsoever with dating. (let's just say I didn't exactly, *ahem* win the genetic lottery.) Anyway, to make a long story short, a guy friend a year younger than me likes me, and I'm pretty sure of this as he's made several (harmless) "moves". He's pretty nice, I like him and I'd like to date him just to see how it works out. However, the problem is, he's really depressed and doesn't have many friends. I know this is a bit pessimistic, but if we dated and then broke up, I don't think he would handle it very well and it would probably be very awkward to be friends again. I do like him and want to date him, but should I? Or should I just wait for the feelings to pass so I don't risk hurting him in case it didn't work out? Thanks!
