AIM

Question Posted Saturday September 9 2006, 7:53 pm

ok, well my mom MAKES me sign on to AIM. its super weird. she wants me to leave an away message and the first thing she does when she comes home is go on the computer, so i don't wanna keep my AIM opened because its just weird that she's reading my stuff. w/e it is, it's just awkward. so, i told her i didn't want to, and she still MAKES me. she tells me like a speech. i don't like to do that. i'll sign on at night and stuff but i don't like to have away messages on during the day and stuff so anyone that uses the computer could see everything. lol. so, what do i do?

I know she's your mother and she has a right to be concerned and everything, but a kid does need SOME privacy. I would just keep refusing to do it, or I would talk to her about it and ask her why she keeps making you, and you're not talking to like, predators or anything and assure her there's nothing to worry about.

Another thing is just let your friends know about it. Just tell them not to send anything real vulgar or rude or anything during the day because your mother might read it, so just save it for later whenever you're on.

Another thing you can also do is make 2 accounts and be on both at the same time. Just make a fake one, and then use your current one, so whenever your mother asks you to sign on, just sign onto the fake one and go on away and nobody'll obviously IM you [ fake friends too ] and then later whenever she's not there, just click on the screename you normally use and talk to your friends there. [ I hope that made sense, haha ]

I hope I helped.

Okay, what the other person said is not true. No matter who you are, you should respect other people's privacy, even if they are your kids.

Just refuse to sign on AIM. Or, you could make up another screenname and sign on it with fake buddies. That way, your mom will think that your friends are always signed off and will [hopefully] stop being so nosey. You could also type in a fake password and convince her that AIM isn't working. Or, sign on AIM and become invisible so that no one will IM you.

I hope I helped and that your mom relaxes.

Well, as your parent she does have a right to know what you are doing/saying and to whom you are talking to on the internet. She is probably just trying to look out for you because the internet can be so dangerous. I know you said you already tried, but you sould try again to talk to your mom. Express to her how you are feeling and calmly tell her that you feel like she doesn't trust you and you wish she did. Hopefully you have not or will not do anything major to lose this trust. If she still doesn't let up just warn some of your friends not to leave any messages that could get you in trouble, or leave up an away message that say's "Mom's on the computer", or something like that. Or, you could also try just staying off the net for a whole week and maybe she will see that you don't even use it that much so she won't want to see it. Just hang in there. :)
