Do 1968 Dodge Chargers have a reputation for timing gear failures?

Not that I am aware of.

It would be helpful to know which engine you are talking about if you require further info.

Typically, when you have a gear failure in a chain driven system, something is seriously amiss.

A chain failure, sure... but a gear failure? I have never seen it happen under normal conditions.
