Question Posted Tuesday July 25 2006, 12:01 am

If I want to become a physical therapist, do I major in kinesiology? If not, then what do I major in? I'm only a sophomore in high school, but I figured getting to know what I want to do early is better than waiting until the last minute.

my knowledge of this field is this: it is VERY COMPETITIVE.
so if your school offers something like a health accademy, definately join! my school offered a health accademy program. It took up about 2 hours of my day and basically the class learned about the health field, the different departments, and got HANDS ON time at the hospital! it was pretty cool that we traveled around the hospital or nursing home and followed around the nurse or doctor and saw actual stuf and worked with real patients! colleges would have loved me if the health field is something i want (i figured out i dont) and if my grades where better (lol)
What im trying to say is..get hands on experience..clinical experience. colleges will love you! ask a physical therapist if you can observe them for 5 days a week for one month lets say. and maybe even get to help out. document your hours so you have proof to show this to a college.

its a great field but very competitve according to my health accademy teacher
hope i helped and have fun! :)

Kinesiology is a good major to go to physical therapy school but it isn't the most important thing you need. Most physical therapy schools want someone who has actually worked with and has references from a working physical therapist. The best way to get started is to meet a few physical therapists and get advice from them. If you know someone who is an orthopaedic surgeon they can help steer you in the right direction. I have taught several students who have gone on to become physical therapists and all did summer internships during high school and college to prepare. This makes it very easy to get a great recommendation. Your major isn't nearly as important as the experience. As long as you have the basic core courses recommended by the physical therapy college you will be just fine. I know physical therapists who majored in music but something that includes sports and kinesiology is probably your best bet. My little sister got her degree in kinesiology and found it to be very interesting but it is a little limited in job prospects if you don't get in to p.t. school. I personally like the idea of having something you enjoy to fall back on just in case you don't get into a p.t. program or find you aren't enjoying it if you do get accepted. I found I wanted to be a doctor up until the time I started med school and realized I would rather be home being a mother to my children. Now I enjoy working with children with learning disabilities and earn as much as many of the doctors I know. A wise person once told me all of the knowledge you need to be successful at a career can be found in one line from a song in the movie Flashdance. "Take your passion and make it happen." Best of luck in your future endeavors.
