Basically it is an astringent which helps to cleanse blocked pores and remove the build up of sebum that can lead to spots.
However, although the products are good, I wouldn't use witch hazel neat on your skin, as it might be too harsh. The lotions, creams and cleansers you can buy that contain it also contain ingredients that make it suitable for it to be used in delicate places like your face.
