Baseball

Question Posted Friday July 21 2006, 5:22 pm

Hi there,

This might sound a bit daft but I saw on your profile that you support the Boston Red Sox.

I'm from the UK and it is my absoloute DREAM to go to America and see them play but I really don't understand the rules of baseball at all. I was hoping you might be able to explain the game to me, so that if i ever do make it out there, I can see them play?

Well, each game consists of 9 innings, and in each inning as soon as 3 "outs" are made, the inning is over and the next team goes up at bat. If you strike out, someone catches the ball that you hit, or if you are thrown out at a base, that is considered an out and the next batter goes up. Each batter is allowed 3 strikes (pitches that are good and should be easily hit) and 4 balls. If the batter is pitched 4 balls (pitches that are not so good)then that is considered a "walk" and the batter gets to take first base. After 3 strikes the batter is out. A foul ball is when the ball is hit outside of the white foul lines located on both the left and right of the field. A "homerun" is when the batter hits the ball over the barriers at the end of field and it is not able to be caught, that scores a run. A "single" is when the batter hits the ball and only makes it to first base, "a double" is when the batter makes it to second base and a "triple" is when they make it to third base. If a batter is running towards a base and the opponet tries to throw him out but the throw by a fielder wasnt it time, then the batter is considered "safe" and gets to stay on the base. A "double play" happens when the fielders make two outs in one play, either by throwing two people out at a base they are running to or catching a ball and throwing someone out, whichever. Everytime a batter makes it around all the bases and to home plate a run is scored. If the game ends up being tied at the last inning, they go on to extra innings until one of the teams scores. Whoever has the most runs at the end of the game wins.
-Hope I explained that well enough! if you have any more questions let me know. I hope you can get to a game sometime they're alot of fun!
