Take balloons and his favorite candy which has to be small and put the candy inside the balloons! Leave them either tied in his room or make a trail of them to his actual present. The balloons if you use helium will actually float or you can blow then up and they can be on the floor! I did that for a 5 year old and he loved getting to pop the balloons to get things out of them!

You could get balloons and get a big basket of his favorite toys and candies. (small things like hot wheels, toy bull dozers...etc) Cans of favorite pop...etc. You could put it in his room where he will see it when he wakes up. You could make a big homemade banner that says HAPPY BIRTHDAY ______!!! You can also try going to google.com and typing in homemade birthday gifts for kids... or things like that. You could make him a card on the computer and also color it with markers to add your own personal touch. You can also ask friends or other family to help you out making one big craft if you feel you need help. I read an article on someone making a homemade hot dog maker for a birthday gift, so you could look that up on google.com if you want. you could make little coupons that say like "1 hour on the tv all by yourself" or "This coupon is good for 3 free chores" ( and you do his chores for him) You could also make your own game that you could play. Use your imagination!! i hope i helped! <3
