OK I was wondering why New York is called The Big Apple. What does it mean & why does it mean that.

i know why. this is probably going to sound insane, but its because new york is (was when this was nicknames) full of hookers, and they were like apples: sweet, but firm to the touch

Basically, they're not really sure. One prevailing theory is that it refers to a section of Manhattan where there were a lot of Jazz clubs that the Jazz players called "The Apple". That if a Jazz player got to be really successful, he got to play in the big apple.

I think that "The Big Apple" is just referring to something one of a kind. Like theres no other big apple; theres no place like new york. I guess. If you skim through those web pages youll see theres a lot of different theories.
