My very troubled brother

Question Posted Saturday July 1 2006, 5:30 pm

My brother is 17-years-old, just graduated high school, has a job, got a F150 for his 16th birthday, wrecked it twice, got a different car a few months after his 2 wreck, has crazy high insurance which he doesn't pay for and he makes $900 dollars a month.

His current car isn't working because he messed up the engine somehow and claims that he can fix it himself so meanwhile he drives either my dad's F250 or my dad's 240 which do NOT have insurance on them (because my dad doesn't drive them anymore and wants to sell them).

He just got into another accident with my dad's F250 (he tapped a guy's van and it barely made a mark on the guy's van but nonetheless, still went to my brother's insurance). At one point, my dad was paying $550 a month for my brother's insurance alone!!

Well, like I said, my brother makes $900 a month and is about to start college. My parents thought that he was saving his money up (he'd always ask them for extra money plus he even told me that he was saving) but my mom looked at his bank statement that just came in the mail today and the only money in there is not even half of the money he got from my parents as a graduation gift (they gave him 6,000 and he only had 2,000 in the bank.

So basically he spent almost 6,000 in 2 months, he doesn't help my parents pay for his high insurance, is about to go to college (my parents have money put aside but they are wanting him to at least want to be responsible), has 5 accidents on his record (2 of which major--all his fault).

When my mom asked him what he spends so much money on he said it was all food and gas (complete BS, who spends 3,000 a month on food and gas when they're 17? plus my mom gives him gas money all the time. He then told my mom that there's never any food in the house (I swear he's retarded, I go shopping with my mom and she spends at least $200 a week on food! There's ALWAYS something to eat and she cooks EVERYDAY!!)

And on top of everything, my dad hasn't been working for the past few months.

He's so fucking irresponsible and bad with money. My parents do their best to give us what we want and he completely takes it for granted. I mean, my parents don't spoil us but we live happily.

Every stupid thing he does reflects on me, of course (I just turned 16 but did I get a car? NOOO because of him!! My dad even said that he was the reason I didn't get a car, because my brother's insurance is SOOO high.)

My mom was just crying over him and I was talking to her, trying to comfort her and she doesn't know what to do with him anymore. They try taking away the cars/truck but he says he needs to go to work. I've told my parents to make him pay for his insurance but they never go through with it! Any suggestions, I can't stand him anymore. And I know it's not my place to "discipline" him but I'd like to give my parents suggestions because it really is reflecting me and that's not fair at all.

Here's how I think I would work it out. Your parents are paying for his college. Anything else should come from his pocket.

If you live where it is possible...bus pass. No car. He would have to buy his own car, insurance and gas. Can't afford it...well, maybe there is an old bicycle in the garage he can borrow.

So long as they are letting him get away with not paying his own way, he won't. :)
