ive been answering alot of questions lately, and my ratings have been coming back in the 4s and 5s- mostly 5s. but my overall rating is roighly 4.5- 4.6. and its stayed this way forever. just the other day i got 13 ratings, most of which were 5s, and my overall rating is still the same. any idea why this is happening? thanks a bunch.
Only feedback in the last 30 days is counted in the average, so what's most likely happening, is that some 5's are dropping out of the calculation because they are becoming over 30 days old.
That keeps your average roughly the same if you are receiving close to the same amount of 5's as you are losing.
As the lesser ratings become over 30 days old, you will see your average increase for the same reason.
Also, remember that ratings for personal questions asked to you don't count in the feedback rating, only ratings from the general pool of questions count.
And finally, there is nothing wrong with a 4.5 average! The rating system is terribly misused. 5's should be relatively rare, only be handed out for truly awesome advice that went the extra mile. Alternately, 1's should only be given if it was an abusive answer and the person should be ban-slapped for it. The vast majority of answers should receive something between a 2 and a 4. If the rating system was used properly, most decent columnists would probably have about a 3.5 to 4 average.
To give you an idea:
1 - Pretty bad advice: harmful, abusive, or trolling for trouble (if you receive a 1 and you were not doing any of these, file an abuse report.)
2 - Not harmful, but not useful either
3 - Decent enough advice: somewhat helpful, the person at least tried
4 - Good advice
5 - Really awesome advice: The person really answered the question in detail, went the extra mile for you, or the advice simply couldn't get any better than this.
