Question Posted Wednesday June 28 2006, 6:21 am

Im SO glad you are good at computers because I definitely need help. I deleted a picture off my computer and it said "sent to recycle bin." So, I deleted it from my recycle bin. Is there anything I can do to ensure no one will find it on my PC? Is that possible to find or is it permanently gone.

Hello there,

A skilled computer technician, or neighborhood nerd could recover it... but they would have to be looking for it.

If you have a tool like Norton Utilities or Norton Systemworks there is a tool with that called "WipeInfo" which will allow you to overwrite all free space on the drive.

That will write a pattern of characters onto the area currently occupied by the hidden remains of that picture.

Once that is done, only a government agency would have the tools to recover that data.

There is a tool called "eraser" which you can download for free. It has an "overwrite free-space" option which will also do what you need.

Here is the download link:

... Read the instructions carefully, as you can completely overwrite your drive if you do the wrong thing.

It will ask you to confirm before you do anything, so pay attention to the messages and only do what you intended to do.

Once you have eraser or one of the Symantec(Norton) tools... you will be able to completely wipe an individual file, rather that the complete free-space of the drive.

The free-space wipe can take a very long time, so in the future you will want to wipe the files directly through the tool you choose.

DN.

P.S. If you had signed up for an account, you would have had an e-mail when I answered you... Why not sign up? Maybe you can give advice to someone else. :-)
