beachpeach answered Thursday June 22 2006, 8:29 pm: TSS is Toxic Shock Syndrome. This can occur, but is very rare, when a tampon is left in the body for more than eight hours. Sometimes, girls who are sick and on their periods and use tampons may fall asleep and wake up and forget and leave it in for a day or more, that is one way it occurs a lot. If you have TSS you first start to develop flu like symptoms that accompany a rash that looks like sunburn. If you have this you lose a lot of fluids and get very dehydrated. This disease is really serious and can make you really sick. You have to be hospatalized if you have this and extremely rarely it can lead to death. To avoid it just make sure never to leave a tampon in for more than eight hours. [ beachpeach's advice column | Ask beachpeach A Question ]
JBella123 answered Thursday June 22 2006, 4:22 pm: Toxic shock syndrome is an uncommon but severe acute illness with fever, widespread red rash accompanied by involvement of other body organs. Toxic shock syndrome is a medical emergency that requires prompt treatment.Toxic shock syndrome is caused by the release of exotoxins from toxigenic strains of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. The majority of menstrual toxic shock syndrome cases is associated with the wearing of tampons, however the condition is now relatively rare, as most adults have developed protective antibodies to the exotoxin TSST-1. Women who have had toxic shock syndrome are at greatest risk as the recurrence rate is reported to be between 30-40%. Toxic shock syndrome and STSS share similar signs and symptoms. Fever, rash, low blood pressure, and multiple organ involvement are seen as the hallmarks of these diseases. Shedding of the skin in large sheets, especially of the palms and soles, is usually seen 1-2 weeks after the onset of illness. Individuals may experience symptoms and signs differently. In addition, toxic shock syndrome may occur as a complication of other localised or systemic infections such as pneumonia, osteomyelitis, sinusitis, and skin wounds (surgical or burns), To find out more about it go to [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [ JBella123's advice column | Ask JBella123 A Question ]

rainbowcherrie answered Thursday June 22 2006, 1:43 pm: TSS is a rare but potentially fatal disease. Infection can occur via the skin {cuts, burns etc} but most people associate it with the use of tampons as they are the most common cause. Symptons vary from person to person but they include a rash - which usually occurs early in the illness - that resembles sunburn, low blood pressure and confusion which can lead to comas or multi-organ failure.
