Best College For Performing Arts?

Question Posted Wednesday June 21 2006, 3:13 pm

Ok so i want to become a singer..singing is my passion. and i've developed new passions for modeling and acting as well..but i dont know the first thing about breaking into the industry. I want to move to NYC after i graduate highschool (most likely in Manhattan..Midtown/Upper West Side) i thought about going to college but i'm not so sure thats the right move. i've even looked at colleges (such as Juilliard) and while Juilliard is nice...they dont offer a course or "major" for singing. The music department is like playing instruments and thats not at all what I want. Does anyone know of any good colleges in NYC? I've never been so i dont know anything about it. and also could someone tell me if college is the right move for what i want to do?

In NY, Manhattan school of music (I think) is pretty much the best there is out there, but I really honestly wouldn't reccomend it for undergrad. Tuition is like 40,000 a year, among other reasons not to go there first off. It's also very competitive, and I don't know if you want to dive headfirst into that. I'd kind of stick your toe in and go to a smaller college first. It doesn't even have to be a conservatory or school of music. Regular universities are good for voice too, sometimes. You've gotta do some checking around, though.
Oakland University in Rochester Hills MI, (which is where I am now), has a very good performance program.
This is all if you want to go into classical music, by the way.
I'm a vocal performance major and my teacher is amazing.
Also, yeah, definitely don't go to Juilliard. They have nothing for voice. They're great for instrumental and dance, but otherwise...not what you want.
Go somewhere with a good teacher to get you started, then go to grad school somewhere else.
You might want to meet with some sort of college advisor and get another opinion.
Good luck
-Siren =)

If your wanting to promote your singing and be the best then you need to choose the best college suited exactly for your needs, one where singing is there major. That may mean you not moving to NYC. You jsut have to decide what is more important to you.

COLLEGE OF MUSIC-There you can learn the business, learn how to sing better, perform for audiences, and make business connections.

Below are several college's that I found where music is that major... Good luck to you.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS
ALBION COLLEGE IN Albion, MI-
MESSIAH COLLEGE IN Grantham, PA-
MOUNT MERCY COLLEGE IN cedarrapids IA-
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE IN Rhode Island-
JAMESTOWN COLLEGE IN Jamestown, ND-
GREENVILLE COLLEGE IN Greenville, NC-
