They say after lightening strikes, the number of seconds equals the number of miles it is away. I'm not exactly sure how they figured it out, but that's just how it is. Hope this helps.

I think I remember this from elementary school haha. Anyway, it's the number of seconds between seeing the flash and hearing the thunder. If you don't hear thunder then it's more than 20 miles away. But, take that number and divide by 5 and that's around how many miles away it is. ]
