Stick shift

Question Posted Thursday June 1 2006, 10:59 pm

I'm 16/f and I have my license but I'm just starting to learn to drive stick and I have a question. What happens if (and I know you're not supposed to do this) while you have the clutch down to switch gears, you keep the gas going as well?

In addition to what the other columnists said, your shift probably won't be smooth at all; since when you go into your new gear, the throttle (which is fed by your gas pedal) is going to be open and not sync with the gear and lunge the car forward a bit. Advanced drivers can do this since they know just about exactly which RPM mates up with a certain gear (very advanced drivers can shift with no clutch at all - but DEFINITELY not recommended).

Ok, it's gunna rev REALLY loud if you do that. This sounds cool, but it's damaging your engine.Since you already know not to do this, you're ahead of the game.

Well, the engine will start screaming at you as you rev it way up. Ideally, changing gears is all about timing - if you keep the gas down while up-shifting, it isn't so bad, because you're accellerating... but down-shifting, you could cause issues - potentially strip the gears, or red-line the engine depending how hard you have the accellerator pedal down.
