Explain to him why the relationship isnt working..avoid saying you just need a break because he'll assume you want to get back together eventually.

Assure him that you dont want to feel awkward that you still want to be friends.

End the conversation with reassurance of no awkwardness.

It always helps me.
Anyways,
hope I helped ya.

Step 1
Think through your thoughts and feelings to clarify why you no longer want to be in a relationship with your boyfriend. This clarity will not only motivate you to follow your feelings, it will also give him a solid answer if he asks why you want to break up.
Step 2
Find a time when you can speak to your boyfriend, one on one. It is important to have this conversation face-to-face rather than by e-mail or over the phone if at all possible.
Step 3
Relax. A break up can be stressful, but doing the right thing can be a little difficult sometimes.
Step 4
Tell your boyfriend that you don't want to continue your relationship at it's current level. Explain why.
Step 5
Allow him to absorb the news and let everything sink in.
Step 6
Answer questions if he has them.
Step 7
Express your desire to maintain a friendship, but only do this if that is how you sincerely feel.
Step 8
Listen to his response. If he tries to convince you to stay with him, explain that you've thought the decision through and your decision is firm.
Step 9
Part ways when the conversation draws to an end, and all of his questions have been answered.
